One Step at a Time

Carolina Shag is South Carolina's official state dance, and it has always been passed from person to person: on the beach, at the club, from someone who knew it to someone who wanted to learn. Nobody picks it up all at once. You learn one step, then the next.

That's how we teach it. Start with the basic and get it into your feet, then move on to turns, footwork and patterns with a partner. Each lesson covers one thing well, and you can rewatch any of them as many times as you need. Shag Class is how we pass the dance on, so wherever you're starting from, you can join the people who keep it alive.

Myers Floyd

Myers Floyd

Myers Floyd is an accomplished shag dancer, choreographer, entertainer, instructor, and proud ambassador of Carolina Shag. Her journey began at a young age, when her father taught her the basics of the dance and sparked a passion that would become a lifelong pursuit.

She attended her first Junior SOS in 2007 and spent years competing in the Junior Shag divisions, earning 2nd Place in Junior 2 with Garrett Spencer and joining the Junior Shag Dance Team in 2010. Those early experiences laid the foundation for an extraordinary career on the shag floor.

In 2022, Myers was inducted into the Beach Shaggers National Hall of Fame as a Keeper of the Dance, recognizing her dedication to preserving and promoting the tradition of shag. That same year she was the Overall CSA Championship Points Earner, reflecting her competitive success throughout the season.

She dances with the Boogie in Motion shag dance team, which captured 1st Place at Grand Nationals in 2019, 2022, and 2023, and is a two-time Grand Nationals Open Strictly Swing Champion, winning in 2014 and 2015. At Shag Nationals she has consistently proven herself among the dance's elite with multiple Top 4 finishes.

In 2026, Myers added 2nd Place in the Carolina Classic at Grand Nationals, was named Entertainer of the Year, and earned 3rd Place in the Cabaret Division.

Her talents extend far beyond competition. She spent three seasons as an NFL cheerleader with the Carolina Panthers TopCats, serving as Captain in her final season, and her performance and choreography background has taken her to groups throughout the Southeast, including the Charlotte Hornets and Carowinds theme park.

Today, Myers and her dance partner, Steve Balok, serve as resident instructors for the SOS Shag Dance Festival. Together they travel throughout the Southeast teaching, competing, performing, and sharing their love of shag with dancers of every age and skill level.

Steve Balok

Steve Balok

Steve Balok is a championship-winning professional Carolina Shag Dancer and instructor from the Charlotte, NC area whose journey into the dance began later than most. At the age of 28, Steve was introduced to Shag by Keeper of the Dance Geoff Burdick and Cameron Davis, who taught him the basics and quickly got him hooked on the dance.

What followed was a rapid rise through the competitive shag world. Just six years after learning his first steps, Steve captured the 2015 Non-Pro National Championship at the National Shag Dance Championship. That same year, he and his partner Jada Bannen won the 2015 Non-Pro Grand National Championship, establishing Steve as one of the top competitors in the Non-Pro division.

Steve moved into the Professional Division in 2016, where he continued building an impressive competitive career. He went on to become a CSA Overall Champion and was a member of the Grand National Championship Team for three consecutive years - 2024, 2025, and 2026.

Today, Steve is partnered with Champion Professional Dancer Myers Floyd. Their partnership has produced several contest wins and has taken them to dance floors, workshops, and events throughout the region.

Steve has been teaching Carolina shag for more than 15 years and currently travels throughout the East Coast teaching workshops, special events, and SOS. His teaching combines his extensive competitive experience with the perspective of someone who discovered Shag as an adult and knows firsthand how quickly a dedicated student can progress.

Starting at 28 and becoming a National and Grand National Champion by 34, Steve has earned a reputation as one of the hardest working professionals in Shag, building his career through dedication, practice, and a relentless desire to improve.

Whether competing at the professional level or teaching a room full of dancers, Steve's goal remains the same: to share his love of Carolina Shag and help continue the dance for future generations.
